§ 05Dev Log

Dev Log 04: Enchanting has three paths now. Plus the Crafting Bench and faction research.

Custom enchants are back and rebuilt around three paths, with a station where no roll is wasted. The Crafting Bench and your faction's research tree are done too, and research decides how far your enchanting goes.

Last time we said your base gets its own stations for crafting, research, and enchanting, and then we left it there. This time you get all three. Enchanting goes first, because there's the most to say about it.

Enchanting has three paths

Three sets of armor trimmed in Essence green, Brute red, and Mystic purple

Custom enchants are back. If you've played Zyphia before, you'll recognize a few of the names, but everything underneath them is new. There are over seventy enchants now, and every one of them belongs to one of three paths.

Brute hits harder. Berserker makes you hit harder the more health you're missing. Sunder keeps building while you stay on one target. Cleave splashes your hits onto the enemies standing around them. Glass Cannon does what it says. You hit far harder, and you die far faster.

Essence keeps you standing. Leech heals you on every hit, and whatever you didn't need spills over to a faction mate beside you. Thornmail hands attackers back some of what they dealt. Second Wind patches you up the moment you drop low. Rally banks the damage you deal and spends it shielding a faction mate who's in trouble. A lot of Essence looks after the people next to you, so every faction is going to want someone on it.

Mystic takes away their options. A hit with Jammer can make your target's next pearl fall short. Curse can leave them unable to pearl, eat, or drink for a few seconds. Blightaura wears down any enemy who stands too close to you in a fight. Mystic is how you stop someone leaving a fight they're losing.

Your gear picks a side. Gear starts out with no path at all. Attuning a piece gives it one, and from then on it only takes enchants from that path. It also takes the path's name, its color, and its armor trim. The first attune on a piece is free. Changing it later costs you, and it wipes whatever was on the piece.

You can read a fight. Trim color tells you what someone is running before the first hit lands. Red is Brute, green is Essence, and purple is Mystic.

A Brute Helmet with two enchants and both slots filled

You can't take everything. Every armor piece has two slots and your weapon has four. That's twelve, and every path has more than that to choose from, so you will leave things behind. Each piece is attuned on its own, too, so nothing stops you mixing paths across your gear.

Gear Sockets add one more. A Gear Socket adds a slot to a single piece, and a piece only takes one. Bosses drop them, and they turn up in the best loot. They're never crafted and never sold.

Rolling at the Enchant Station

The Enchant Station menu

Any enchanting table you find opens an Enchant Station. Pick what you're enchanting, then a path, then a tier, and pay in Enchant Shards. What comes back is a book. Drag it onto a piece attuned to the same path and it's applied.

No roll is wasted. There are no success rates and nothing destroys your gear. A roll also won't hand you an enchant you already have while there's still one in that pool you don't. The station shows you the most it can cost to get the one you're after.

You can't grind for shards. Killing mobs pays nothing. Check your balance with /shards, and keep in mind that a share of it drops when you die.

The higher tiers have to be unlocked. There are four tiers of enchants. The first is open to everyone. The other three open up as your faction researches them, which we'll get to further down.

Your tools get a path too. Tools have enchants of their own, and plenty of them are built around the resource nodes from the last dev log. Dowsing marks nearby nodes for your eyes only. Surveyor reads a node's tier and how much is left in it. Sledge breaks a whole face of stone in one swing. Second Life saves a tool from the hit that would have broken it, once.

Levels and sets. Enchants have levels, and a book from the station starts at the first. Stack enough of one path and it starts paying you back as well.

Every enchant is listed in game. /ce opens the Enchant Guide, with every enchant on every path and what it does. The numbers are still being balanced, which is why you won't find any in this post.

Everything is made at the bench

The Crafting Bench menu

Vanilla crafting tables make nothing on Zyphia. Every recipe lives at the Crafting Bench, from your first stone sword to the kits for the structures in the last dev log.

You start with one. /kit hands you a Crafting Bench, and you can open it from your menu wherever you are.

It reaches into your silos. Stand on your own claim and the bench pulls what it needs straight from your faction's silos. There's no hauling stacks across the base first.

Gear comes in four steps. Stone, then iron, then diamond, then netherite. Stone is open from day one. Each step after that stays locked until your faction researches it, and that's where the last station comes in.

Research belongs to your faction

The Armory branch of the research tree

Research is one tree for the whole faction. It has five branches and nearly fifty unlocks, and it decides what your bench can make and how far your enchanting can go.

One of you pays and everyone gets it. When a member researches something, the whole faction has it from that moment.

Research is paid for in Research Shards. They're an item in your inventory until you spend them, so anyone who kills you first gets them instead.

Bigger factions pay a bit more. Past a handful of members, every unlock costs a little extra, up to a cap. It goes by the most members you've ever had, so kicking people before a big purchase won't save you anything.

The Armory is your gear. It opens iron, then diamond, then netherite, and it raises your enchanting ceiling one tier at a time. At the deep end it also unlocks an Enchant Station of your own to build at base.

Industry is your machines. The bigger Refiners, the higher generator levels, and the extractors that go after diamonds, sulfur, and the rarest metal in the game all sit behind it.

Homestead is home. More storage, better food, and quicker trips back to base.

That leaves two. They're called Construction and Siegecraft. You can probably guess what's in them, and they're staying shut until the cannon dev log.
